Cataract Lens Options
An intraocular lens (or IOL) is a tiny, artificial lens for the eye. It replaces the eye’s natural lens that is removed during cataract surgery. Your lens should be clear. But if you have a cataract, it has become cloudy. Cataract surgery removes this cloudy lens and replaces it with a clear IOL to improve your vision.
When you decide to have cataract surgery, your doctor will talk to you about IOL’s and the different options available.

Types of Intraocular Lenses (IOL's)
The MONOFOCAL LENS IMPLANT is the implant chosen by about 70% of patients. Unless you have astigmatism, it should provide good distance vision without glasses. With any lens implant, however, it might be necessary to fine-tune the distance vision with glasses. This implant is paid for by your insurance. Unlike the Premium lens implants, there is no additional charge to the patient for the monofocal lens implant.
TORIC IOLs both correct astigmatism and recapture quality distance vision in one step. Until their recent introduction, candidates for IOLs could only have nearsightedness and farsightedness corrected during cataract surgery. Toric IOLs provide the freedom from glasses you’re looking for while correcting astigmatism.
The ACRYSOF® IQ PANOPTIX® TRIFOCAL INTRAOCULAR LENS is an artificial lens implant that is used to improve vision after cataract removal in people who also have blurred vision due to an irregularly shaped cornea (corneal astigmatism). The lens works by bending light rays to allow them to focus on the retina (the back surface of the eye) to provide for improved distance (driving, playing golf), intermediate, and near vision.
The ACRYSOF® IQ VIVITY™ EXTENDED VISION IOL is an artificial lens implant used to focus images clearly onto the back of your eye (retina) to allow clear vision after the cataract removal. This IOL provides clear distance vision (e.g. watching children in the backyard). In addition, it allows for better intermediate vision (working on a computer, applying makeup or shaving) and some near vision (reading, knitting) compared to what a monofocal IOL would provide. You will get the full benefit of the AcrySof® IQ Vivity™ Extended Vision IOL when it is implanted in both eyes
MULTIFOCAL IOLs have different focusing powers within the same lens. These IOLs reduce your dependence on glasses by giving you clear vision for more than one set distance. They provide both distance and near focus at the same time.
