How Does FLACS Work?
In essence, FLACS entails using a laser attached to a computer. This device automates several steps of the surgical procedure, steps that are done by hand in traditional cataract surgery. By analyzing the eye using ocular coherence tomography, the surgery is truly customized to each patient’s individual needs. The laser can soften the cataract inside the eye prior to cataract surgery which, in turn, can make for a more gentle operation.
The laser can also correct low and moderate amount of astigmatism which may, in turn, lessen the patient’s reliance on glasses. FLACS can lead to better centration and positioning of the intra-ocular lens implant (IOL) which is especially important when the patient chooses an astigmatism correcting (toric) or Extended Depth of Focus IOL.
Benefits of Laser-Assisted Surgery
Using a laser allows the surgeon to make precise incisions in less time. It can improve accuracy and consistency. In some cases, the laser can provide more correction than traditional surgery. The laser can reduce the amount of ultrasound energy needed to soften the lens prior to removal.
However, studies do not show that laser surgery results in fewer complications. Also, studies haven’t found that laser surgery provides better outcomes. Your outcome depends in large part on the skill and experience of your surgeon.
